Ten things to do with the kids, checked, every Thursday.Family Weekends

Claude searches the city’s event sites, checks every date, and emails me ten weekend picks my kids will love.

“Weekends were mostly the same with me and my kids. I didn’t realize how many fun activities were going on throughout the city until I created this skill. Now me and my kids have a wealth of fun stuff to choose from, and this has really enhanced our lives.”

Overview

What this does

Bucharest has a lot going on for kids. Shows, football, LEGO days, runs, museums. The trouble is finding it. It’s spread across a dozen sites, half in Romanian, and most lists are out of date.

So every Thursday, Claude does the looking. It reads the city’s best family event sites. It opens every event page to check the date, the time, the place and the price. It throws out anything for toddlers or teens, anything too far away, and anything it can’t check.

Then it picks ten. Each one says which kid it suits, and why it’s fun. The list lands in my inbox with the full link next to every pick.

My part is the fun part: choose one, book it, and go.

A copied version runs on your own email and searches your own city. It never touches anyone else’s account.

Before

Before: how I used to do it

There wasn’t really a method. That was the problem.

01I Googled “fun things to do this weekend.” The results were generic, or months old.
02Or I hoped something turned up on Instagram. If it didn’t, we did what we always did.
03So weekends looked the same. Not because there was nothing on. Because I never saw it.
After

How it works, in four steps

Claude does the first three on its own. The last one is mine.

1Thursday

Claude reads the city’s event sitesin a set order, every week

  • Starts with the best local family guide and opens every event it links to.
  • Then the city roundups, the kids’ theatres and the football fixtures.
  • Then a sweep for the things my kids love: sport, LEGO, science days, karting.
Watch for Your city’s sites will be different. The first time, tell Claude where you’d look yourself.
2automatic

Claude checks every pickor drops it

  • The date comes from the event’s own page, never from a roundup.
  • It must suit the kids’ ages and be within about 50 km.
  • No price on the page? It says “price not shown” instead of guessing.
The rule that matters If it can’t be checked, it doesn’t go in. Nine real picks beat ten with one made up.
3automatic

The email landsten picks, one top pick first

  • Each pick says which kid it suits: both, or one of them.
  • At least one show or film, and at least two free things.
  • A short note on what needs booking, and anything it skipped.
Watch for Links hidden behind a word like “Tickets”. The skill prints the full web address, so you can see where it goes.

I pick, check and bookmy part

  • I read the list and choose with the kids.
  • I open the listing and check it again before we go.
  • I book or register myself. Claude never books anything.
Still by hand The final check. Events change. A quick look at the page before you drive saves a wasted trip.

The hard parts

What goes wrong — so it doesn’t go wrong for you

The one that got us

The list came too late to plan with.

I first set it to run on Thursday afternoon. It worked fine. But by the time it arrived, the week was nearly gone. Some things needed booking. Some filled up. I wanted the list in the morning, with a full day to talk it over and book.

Set the time for when you plan your weekend, not for when it’s easy to run.

  • Run it early in the day. Early Thursday works for us.
  • Give yourself time to book. Shows and runs often need a ticket or a sign-up.
  • Put the dates in the subject. Then you know at a glance which weekend it’s for.

I still check before we go

Claude checks every listing. I check again before we leave. Events move, sell out, or get cancelled.

One look at the page, then drive.

Toddler shows slip in

Lots of kids’ events are for ages 3 to 6. A 9-year-old will not thank you. The skill sets an age range and drops anything outside it.

Write the ages in. Be strict.

Roundups get dates wrong

City lists copy each other, and old dates hang around. So the date always comes from the event’s own page.

Event page or nothing.

Keep your kids out of the copy

The version below has blanks for names, ages and neighbourhood. Fill them in on your own copy. Don’t post them anywhere public.

Blanks on the web. Names in your copy.

Two more things worth knowing

One skill per family

There are two copies of this skill in our circle, one for each family. Each has its own name. Two skills with the same job and the same name get mixed up.

Give each copy its own name.

Fewer than ten is fine

Some weeks are quiet. The skill sends what it could check and says so. That’s better than padding the list.

Honest beats full.

Your turn

Copy this and use it today

One skill. It searches your city and emails your inbox — never anyone else’s.

Step 1

Copy the skill

Pick a tab below and press Copy skill. The whole skill is now on your clipboard.

Step 2

Paste it into Claude

Open a new chat, paste it, and say: “Turn this into a skill and set it up for me.”

Step 3

Answer the questions

Every {{ }} is a blank. Claude asks you for each one and fills in your own names, folders and accounts.

Step 4

Switch it on and try it

Check it’s on under Settings › Capabilities › Skills. Then run it once on something low-stakes, and watch what it does.

Run it by hand once, on a quiet week. When you like the list, set it to run early every Thursday morning.

# Weekend picks for my kids

Once a week, find things to do this weekend that my kids will actually enjoy. Check every one. Email me the list.

## Fill these in once

Replace every {{PLACEHOLDER}} below with your own, then save the skill.

| Placeholder | What it is | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| {{KIDS}} | each kid's name or nickname, age, and what they like | Kid 1 (9): sports, LEGO. Kid 2 (7): crafts, animals |
| {{AGE_RANGE}} | the youngest and oldest age to plan for | 7-9 |
| {{HOME_AREA}} | your neighbourhood and city | [your neighbourhood], Bucharest |
| {{RANGE_KM}} | how far you'll drive | 50 |
| {{NEARBY_PLACES}} | towns inside that range | Snagov, Mogosoaia, Buftea, Otopeni, Corbeanca, Cernica |
| {{EMAIL}} | where the list goes | you@example.com |
| {{LANGUAGE}} | language of the email | English |
| {{SOURCES}} | your city's best family event sites | see the Bucharest list below |

## Who
- {{KIDS}}.
- Home is {{HOME_AREA}}. Range: the city plus about {{RANGE_KM}} km out ({{NEARBY_PLACES}}).

## Window
The coming Saturday and Sunday. Run `date`, work out the exact dates, and put them in the subject. Never guess them.

## Research, in this order
Use {{SOURCES}}. For Bucharest, these work:
1. **stiudelasorina.ro**: this week's "Mami, tati, unde mergem in weekend?" article on the homepage, plus every /event/ page it links. Open each event page to confirm the date, time, venue and price.
2. **City roundups**: search "ce faci in Bucuresti in weekendul <dates>" on bucuresti.ro, b365.ro, bucurestifm.ro, zilesinopti.ro, a1.ro and bucharestevents.ro.
3. **Theatre and film**: the teatrulioncreanga.ro schedule (only shows for the right ages), Opera Comica pentru Copii, Tandarica, and children's film screenings.
4. **Football**: home games for the local clubs on lpf.ro, plus games at Arena Nationala.
5. **Sweep**: LEGO or brick shows, sports taster days, family runs (check registration is still open), karting, trampoline parks, robotics or STEM days, museums, and outdoor events in the nearby towns.

## Filter
- It happens on Saturday or Sunday. Take the date from the event's own page.
- It suits ages {{AGE_RANGE}}. No toddler shows, nothing for teens.
- It's within about {{RANGE_KM}} km.
- It has a working link to the event or ticket page, not a homepage. If you can't check it, drop it.
- Show the price only if the source states it. Otherwise write "price not shown".

## Output
Exactly 10 picks. Tag each one: "both kids" or which kid it suits best.
Lean on what the kids like. Include at least one theatre or film pick and at least two free ones.

Email format (HTML, {{LANGUAGE}}, no Markdown):
- One-line **top pick** first.
- A numbered list. Each item: **name**, category and which kid; day, time, venue and price; one sentence on why it's fun; the full URL.
- **Notes**: what needs booking, anything skipped and why, and at most one bonus idea.

Links: always print the full URL as the visible text. Never hide a link behind words like "Tickets" or "Details".

If fewer than 10 picks check out, send fewer and say so.

## Send
Send it to {{EMAIL}} with the subject `Weekend picks for the kids - Sat D - Sun D Mon`. Send it directly. Don't make a draft.

## Running on a schedule
Run it early on the day you plan the weekend (for us, Thursday morning), so there's time to book. When it runs on its own, don't ask questions. Put any guess in one line at the top of the email and send it.
